Overnight Volunteers Needed

A Note from Colin, Trustee and Overnight Volunteer

Our shelter is currently open only four nights a week, which means some guests have to improvise and sometimes sleep rough. This is a real impediment to them as they try to rebuild their lives. The biggest thing stopping us from opening an extra night? A shortage of overnight volunteers. We need around 10 more volunteers before we can consistently open that extra night.

Each night, two volunteers are on from 9:30pm - 7:30am. Most volunteers choose a regular night each month or fortnight, but flexible volunteers are always welcome. A typical night is quiet - our 12 guests are mostly asleep. You’ll spend part of the night helping with guest laundry, being on hand for any issues, and catching up on work, reading, or Netflix. The rest of the night you can sleep in the volunteer bedroom.

If you enjoy interacting with guests, you’ll get to chat with them as they settle in and over a simple breakfast. Many guests stay for weeks, so you’ll see them in a calmer, more relaxed environment—and get to know them well.

Full training is provided, new volunteers are teamed with experienced ones, and a trustee is always on call if needed. Most overnight volunteers will tell you that nothing has ever arisen that they couldn’t handle.

In exchange for just a few hours of sleep, you’ll make a real difference. Come to a volunteer induction session and try it for yourself - we’d love to have you on board!
