Volunteering

We never have enough volunteers for the Night Shelter. If we had more volunteers we would be able to give extra time to our guests and perhaps open one more night.

Giving time to Guests

You can help by being a volunteer at the Night Shelter. We need volunteers at three different periods of the day.

New request

Due to the retirement of some of our cleaners, we urgently need extra help. If you would be interested to find out more, please email our Volunteers' Co-ordinator.

Volunteers are needed in the mornings to help clean the shelter and sort clothes and food stock. Cleaning teams operate three days a week; on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between approximately 10 am and 12 noon. Your help at just one of these sessions on a regular basis would be greatly appreciated.

Tidying Up
Tidying Up in the morning

Volunteers are needed in the evenings to help with many different tasks: preparing food, serving meals and drinks, talking to guests and washing up. The evening sessions run approximately from 8:30 pm to 11 pm. Volunteers are encouraged to commit themselves to one session per month; of course helping more frequently is of even greater benefit!

Kitchen Duties

Volunteers are needed overnight to supervise the sleeping guests and to prepare and serve breakfast. Overnight volunteers are requested to arrive by 10:30 pm for handover from the evening team at 11 pm. During the night, volunteers should be able to get three-hours' sleep, while others are on duty, rising at 6 am to prepare breakfast. It's all over by 7:30 am when the guests leave.

To become a volunteer you need to be at least 18 years old and to apply to our Volunteers' Co-ordinator. You will be asked to attend an introductory tour of the Night Shelter on a Wednesday evening where you will have the opportunity to ask questions. You will then be provided with an Induction Pack to take away and given time to consider whether you want to join and what you could offer. Although the Induction Pack provides information on a wide range of subjects: First Aid, Food Hygiene, Dealing with Difficult People, Drug Abuse and Fire Safety, training courses are also provided during the year to explore these areas in more detail. From your very first session you will be working alongside experienced volunteers and will not be asked to take on more responsibility than you want to.

But, if none of this sounds like your cup of tea, there are other ways to help.
